Mrs. Allen, the sponsor of the HMS KAY group, is a sixth grade Social Studies teacher at Holton Middle School. She has been running this group for 16 years. Her favorite memory from KAY this year was, “when the state director came to the exercise path at the park because we did a big grand opening of the exercise path so we had a big celebration when she came.”
What makes her want to continue to run KAYS is, “I love being able to work with all the members to show them the importance of service.” She decided to start running KAY because, ”My grandma instilled the importance of giving back to me at a very young age and i knew that taking over the sponsor position for KAY would help me fulfill that position.”
Her favorite activity from KAY was working on the pickleball court. She also loves to do the lasagna meal and chocolate room. Another thing she loved was when they did an Easter egg hunt for the preschool.
Some of the upcoming events are: playing bingo at the Jackson County Nursing Home and their Christmas party that they’re going to be doing in December. They also do service projects every Friday. KAY is a service organization that serves the school, the community, the nation, and the world.
The board members choose some of the events they do but they have to cover all of the following things: something for the school, something for the community, something for the nation, and something for the world. If they do this, they get a Gold Award. Board members are elected by teacher evaluation, interview process, and KAY member’s vote.
To join KAY you have to sign up, get parent permission, and pay dues.
Julia Cannon, a board member of KAY, is an 8th grade HMS student. She has been in KAY for 2 years, not including this year. She thinks that getting to do fun activities and help people is what makes KAY fun. She decided to join KAY because it sounded fun. One of her favorite memories from KAY is when she went to the conferences. She enjoys being a KAY board member.
