In
1917, Melvin Jones organized the first Lions Club in Chicago to create
an association for humanitarian service. The Lions motto is "We
Serve." The motto was
adopted in 1954.
In
1925, Helen Keller asked the
Lions to become the "Knights of the Blind." Since then, sight related
activities are a focus point for Lions.
The first Lions Club
organized in Kansas was the Wichita Downtown in 1919.
The first Lions Constitution was
drafted and adopted in May 1927.
The mission statement
for the International Association is: To create and foster a spirit of
understanding among all people for humanitarian needs by providing
voluntary services through community involvement and international
cooperation.
The
Lions emblem was adopted in 1919. On it there are two lions facing away
from the center. This represents the past and the future, pride in the
heritage and confidence in the future.
