The Roebke Memorial Museum at 216 New York Avenue in Holton, Kansas was given to the Jackson County Historical Society by Miss Doris Roebke as a memorial to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Roebke, Sr. and her sisters and brothers, Rose Roebke Volker, Charlotte (Lottie) Roebke, Karl Roebke, and Louis Roebke, Jr.
The original home, built in 1876 by Mr. Roebke for his bride, Kate Sollner, was a two-story house consisting of the present dining room - which was the kitchen; the living room - which is now the front hall; and two upstairs bedrooms. As the family grew the house was enlarged. It now contains six rooms downstairs and five rooms upstairs, plus a full, floored third story. This home was the scene of many social functions from the time the family was in school through Doris' living there alone.
Among the displays you will find one of the country's finest collections of century-old white Victorian era clothing; a children's room with buggy, toys and clothing; Roebke girls' graduation dresses; and many musical items, including an organ, player piano, Victrola and concertina.. The exhibits are changed periodically, so our collections may be seen and enjoyed by our guests. Display cards tell the wonderful stories that go with many of the items.
Visitors who have toured the home often comment about having such a delightful time. It is appropriate that this house can continue to be a cultural and social center in Historic Holton. The Roebke Memorial Museum can be accessed by stopping at the museum and also by appointment. It is located just 1 1/2 blocks south of the Historic Courthouse Square on New York Avenue.
