THE CITY OF HOLTON, KS

BRICK STREET RESTORATION PROJECT

The City of Holton is restoring several blocks of brick streets within it's City limits. We have a total of 25 miles of streets with approximately 7 miles of brick. In 1994 the city voted to pass a 1/4 percent sales tax earmarked specifically for street improvements. The City Commission committed 1/2 of the proceeds of this sales tax to go toward the brick streets. With the proceeds of this sales tax we are replacing the curb and gutters and totally restoring the brick, hiring 8 youths in the summer to lay the brick. We try to restore 2 full blocks every year and do a considerable amount of patching in other areas.

The Holton City Commission has appointed a Street Committee comprising of 3 City residents, the Street Superintendent and the City Manager. The local residents appointed to the Street Committee are individuals familiar with / or directly involved in the construction industry. The Street Committee meets in January and reviews all of the brick streets and makes recommendations to the City Commission which blocks to renovate during that year. These recommendations are taken to the City Commission and with their approval the Street Program is set for the year.

A meeting is scheduled sometime in February and all property owners that will be affected by the street renovation project are invited to meet and discuss the details of the proposed project. We try to answer any questions and address any concerns individuals may have. This often eliminates problems down the road (so to speak).
